Why I am Hunting Mushrooms in the Snow?!

The Snow is getting deeper here in the Mountains of the North East!

But…  That is not enough to stop the Wild Forage and Medicine Craft!  In fact, it becomes all the more fun!
I am so enamored by these snow white crystals of solid state water that adorn the ground here.  The purity of the winter air, the stillness and quietude of the Northern forests in January, this is why I inhabit this latitude of the Earth!

The Quest for Mushroom of Immortality has been one of those most Healing and Transformative paths of my Journey.  It has lead me into the Wilds, and into relationship with a unique Kingdom of Life…  the Fungi.

These, the Medicinal Mushrooms, which are actually a distinct class of species known as the ”Polypores” contain structural components that are often called “polysaccharides”.  This term means “many sugars”, and refers to a long-chain sugar that they use to construct their “Fruit Bodies”, which is the term for the mushroom itself.

To put this into perspective, keep in mind that wood is made from cellulose, which is also a long-chain sugar, one that we humans lack an enzyme to digest.  It is likely that the building you are reading this in is made of sugar.  The whole of the forest is made of sugar!  Interesting, right?

Mushrooms, unlike plants, form their cell wall out of Chitin, another long chain sugar.  This sugar is the building material not only for fungal cell walls, but for the exoskeletons of insects, shrimp, lobsters, crabs, and even the beaks of squid!

It, just like cellulose, is also indigestible to humans and this is why we are unable to digest raw mushrooms.  This is not to say that they can not be eaten, but rather that we have no means of breaking through their cell wall to liberate the nutrients from within.

They sort of just pass right through…
Now, what does this have to do with Medicine, and what makes these mushrooms so “Medicinal”?

Inside the chitinous cell wall are another class of polysaccharides known as “Beta-Glucans“.  These long-chain, complex sugar molecules are “Biological Response Modifiers”.  They have the ability to alter function in the body in way that is referred to as “Adaptogenic“.

Essentially, Beta-Glucans modulate the immune system, by lowering the overactive (auto-immune) Immune System, and stimulating the under-active (immuno-deficient) Immune System.

In otherwords they assist the body in adapting to its own unique circumstances.  This is very different from pharmaceuticals or even herbal immuno-stimulants which simply excited the nervous system.  Mushrooms lead to adaptation…  and adaptation is evolution…  Mushrooms ‘evolve’ your Immune System.  And this is becoming increasingly critical in this Brave New World we are living in!

Over time, experimentation, and intimate experience with these Organsims, I have come to see the Medicinal Mushrooms as Immune System “Re-Educators”.  The complex Sugar Molecules they contain re-train our Immune Systems to better clean away the viral, fungal, and bacterial load the our bodies have been dealing with.

Beyond this they work to ‘Tonify’ the Liver, Scavenge and Destroy Cancer and Tumor Cells, speed Wound Healing, reduce the likelihood of Infection, and so much more.

Of course you are thinking, ‘how do I get these sugars into my body?’  Well remember, first we have to get them out of the cell.

There are many products on the market that are made from “crushed” or “tinctured” (extracted in Ethanol) mushrooms.  Most are not the Fruit Body at all, but rather, they are made form the Mycelia.

The “Fruit Body” is the portion of the Fungus we think of when we picture a Mushroom.  This is in fact the fruit, much like the apple on the tree.  The ‘Tree’ itself, or in this case the Fungal body is called the Mycelia, and it is a delicate filament system that is embedded in the ‘Substrate” that it is growing in.  In the case of Medicinal Mushrooms this is usually, in Nature at least, Trees.

Today, because of recent advances in Fungal Farming, these Mushrooms can now be grown indoors.  All to often they are being grown on substrates like commercially grown rice, which may produce mushrooms that look healthy but do not constitute the natural food for these organisms.  Many of the products that people have been buying do not contain the fruit body at all, but rather the mycelium biomass, and this is often simply crushed or alcohol extracted.  Unfortunately neither process liberates the Beta-Glucans from the Chitinous Cell Wall, and so, from the perspective of Immuno-Modualtion, these products are all but useless.

The obvious question is this…  ”How do we best access these Beta-Glucans for use?” Its one our ancestors asked as well…  And here is what they discovered.

Mushrooms are best extracted in Hot Water.  In fact there is 5000 years of Chinese medical history in which they have been used this way!  They are, and were, boiled in Water, and the resulting ‘tea’ (called a decoction) is drunk as medicine.  This has been shown to be 50-80X more potent than Mycelium Bio-mass or tinctures.

The Chinese and all those who followed used exclusively the Wild Fruit Bodies of these highly biologically active species.  Many of us follow suit today.  I have been Wild-Crafting these species for years, and have led walks and retreats around North America so that others can learn too.

This is a highly rewarding pursuit, and in my mind, one of the parts of the healing that can occur from working with Mushrooms. I always recommend that people use medicines that are growing wild in the eco-range that they are a part of. These organisms are producing medicine in response to their own needs within their eco-system, as well as to meet the needs of the ecosystem itself. Since your immune system needs are, in part, a reflection of the demands of your eco-system, the wild species from your area obviously represent the best medicines possible for you.

Still, there are many people who desperately need medicines of this caliber.  There are Mushroom Formulas on the market that are made properly, and work so well that I would stake my reputation on them.

First let me just say, no matter where you get them, here are a few basic requirements for any Medicinal Mushroom formula that you purchase.

~They must be made from Fruit Bodies.  The scientificaly validated research on Mushrooms is largely based on Fruit Bodies extractions, not bulk Mycelia.  Mycelia products are often mixed with their substrates.  You end up buying the corn or rice they were grown on.  There is literally thousands of years of history using Fruit Bodies, there is virtually no history using Mycelia.

~They must be Hot Water Extracted.  The Beta Glucans are held within a rigidly locked structure of Chitin.  It is like the sheets particle board that is used to build a house.  If you wanted to remove the particles from the board you would have to dissolve the glue that is binding them together.  This glue (chitin) is hot water soluble, but will not dissolve into alcohol.  This is why tinctures of medicinal don’t work.

The research on Medicinal Mushrooms has been largely (if not completely) done using Hot Water Extracts (tea) and this is critical for the extraction of the Beta Glucan Fraction of the fruit-body.

~A combination Hot Water and Ethanol extraction is even better when working with single formula mushrooms like Reishi and Chaga, and this is because of the Alcohol Soluble Fraction found within them.  This is largely the “Triterpine” complex, and these molecules are responsible for many of the Adaptogenic properties of these species.

When I produce medicine at home with my Wild Harvested Specimens, I do both Hot Water and Ethanol extracts and then combine them.  This makes for the most complete formula, and is the full compliment of medicines.  Remember, if you can only get one extraction you definitely want the Hot Water Extract, not tinctures or mycelium biomass.

My company, SurThrival has created just such a line of Mushrooms, we call it Immortality Quest! In fact we feel it is the best available anywhere on this scale. Our single species formulas are from Wild (Chaga) or Log Grown (Reishi) Fruit Bodies which have been both Hot Water and Ethanol extracted, and then spray dried.  The resulting powder is in capsules, and there are a full 150 caps to a bottle (this is a double sized container).

Our “Synergy” Formula consists of 5 Wood Grown species and is designed for those who are looking for the synergistic effects of a mushroom combination. This is in response to much of the cancer research that has shown that a broad spectrum of Beta Glucans is most beneficial.

I personally use all 3 formulas, in addition to using the mushrooms I Wild Craft and Prepare.  They have become a powerful ally in my Immuno-Strategy, and have provided me with an Adaptability that has left me fearless of the colds and flu’s that circulate throughout the population.

I also feel that relationship with these species will become even more critical as we face the many impending consequences of the industrial pollution, emerging disease, and powerful biome/climate shifts that are underway.

Adaptability is the name of the Game for those who want to Thrive in the Coming Age.

That is why I have called my company “SurThrival”.  It is about more than Surviving…  It is about Thriving.  Thriving no matter what the circumstances, no matter what the mass population is facing.

There are medicines that occur here on Earth, naturally that can assist us through whatever transitions the world is facing.  I believe Mushrooms are principle amongst these!

So, now you know why I am trekking through the snow to gather Wild Mushrooms, and why I have created a company to meet the Immuno-Needs of my Community!

To Your Invincible Health!

~Daniel

P.S. Last year Sarah Maria and I led a Wild Mushroom Foraging Retreat in the Kootenay Mountains outside of Nelson BC.  We studied Mushrooms, Harvested them, made medicine out of them, and more…  If you are interested in doing something like this, post a comment below to let us know!

    Daniel,
I am excited to share my latest forest hunting trip with you. With many people not sure what species of mushrooms they are finding, I'm uploading my videos to youtube (medicinehunter) to help others see where to find mushrooms and what they are finding. Its great to have a blog here to comment and discuss medicinal mushrooms. Would love to see you do a Wild retreat in the lakes and springs state of Minnesota!

Daniel, I was just reading through the comments and you mention not being a raw foodist. I know that you eat wild meat. Have you ever eaten it raw? If buying organic grassfed meats, do you cook them? Also, have you ever been a raw foodist? If yes, what made you decide to stray away?

I personally am VERY interested in your diet and how it has evolved from say 5 years ago. Is there anyway you could reveal this information some time?
  • Etienne,

I have and do eat raw meat, as well as cooked. Stray away is not really how I would describe it. After a decade of rawfoodism my personal experience led me to what I feel is the next level. I am now interested more in indigenous and traditional diets, diets that have stood the test of time. Rawfoods serves people for a while, especially to cleanse them of industrial pollution. I personally feel that there are many level one can advance beyond this approach.

There are reasons that there have never been vegan or rawfood cultures through time. Though there are strong intillectual argumants for this diets, long term experience does not support them.

My own diet has been in transition for 16 years. Every day I move more and more in the direction of our ancestors. My diet is as local and wild as I can manage.

When a persona begins working with traditional and wild foods heat treatment really starts to make some real sense. Of course when we live on foods from the supermarket, foods that have been hybridized to remove their medicines, many can be eaten raw.

Sometime in the future I will share more specifics on my own dietary strategies. My Invincible Health (www.invinciblehealthmastery.com) program details alot of this strategy.

More to come soon... What I will say is this... things are not what they seem, and much of the "healthy food" concepts that are around today turn out to be anything but...

Thanks so much for being present on this site!

    Blessings!

  • Very nice site! is it yours too

I am always interested in learning about foraging mushrooms, i would love it if you did another retreat in british columbia!
  • Maddy!

I am considering ways of bringing a mushroom foraging class to people.... It is forthcoming in some form or another!

daniel i was wondering if making chaga tea from fresh chaga that i picked do i have to dry it first? And also should i boil the water or just warm it?
  • Skibo!

Do boil it! 2 hours is best. Be sure to use enough water so that it doesn't boil off. Bring it up to a boil and then reduce the heat a bit.

Go ahead and use it fresh, this is far nicer than dried as your final "tea" (decoction) will contain the water from the chaga itself. THe only reason to dry it would be for storage or use for primitive skills like making fire with it.

    Hi Daniel,

Thanx for your reply, I'll be checking for those dates in May! I have one more chaga question for you: I know that some other mushrooms have poisonous look-alikes... does chaga have one? I haven't found any info saying so but I wanted to check before I go out hunting for them. Thanx again!

    Heather
  • Heather,

Nope, Chaga is one of a kind! A wild Chaga harvest video is coming soon!

    ~D
  • Daniel, I love your blog, keep the articles coming, really appreciated :-)

Please, I am missing more detailed explanation. Maybe you already posted it somewhere, so you can give me a link?

I don't understand the process. I have picked the mushrooms near in my forest and then what?

Bring water to boil and put them in like they are?
Or should I slice them or grind?
    How long to boil them?
Can I eat the mushroom also after the boiling, or just to drink the tea?

I have been for mushroom hunting yesterday for the first time. I would like to visit your workshops, but I am from far away - Czech Republic. I am not sure if the mushrooms I have found are eatable, I have to do a research first. But here are the pictures, maybe somebody can tell me directly :-) http://picasaweb.google.cz/neon22inn/100112#

I am also testing raw foodism for a while. Until that, I was eating macrobiotic diet for 10 years. I am just wanting to experience the results of raw foods on me directly. But as you mention the 5000 year old ancient chinese tradition with cooking the mushrooms. I am questioning one thing. These chinese traditions were developed mainly by taoists. And they were cooking not only mushrooms, but their staple food were cooked grains and vegetables. Why do you take their wisdom of cooked mushrooms and not also the cooking of the grains and veggies?

Thank you very much for your time. You are really wonderful and inspiring person :-)
  • Neon,

I am not a rawfoodist, so I do steam my grains. My favorite is wild rice!

The mushrooms you found look to be Red Belted Polypore. Fometopsis Pinicola. If indeed they are you can prepare them a few ways.

You can slice them while they are fresh, though you will need a sturdy knife. Once they are dry they are very difficult to cut. Grinding them would be overkill.

Yes, you can boil them for around an hour, and then consume the tea. They are not edible after and you can compost them, or toss them back to the forest.

    Enjoy!!!

  • Ben
    Daniel,

What compound(s) within reishi is responsible for the mild psychoactive effects? Every manufacturer of reishi products will tout the medicinal properties to oblivion and never mention the mind-stimulating effects, which I find to be the most interesting and powerful part of the mushroom. Please point me in the right direction to find more information about this aspect of reishi.
  • Ben,

I have never seen a reference to the source of that property. I will say this, it is strongest in the wild varieties.

There is a book, if you have not already read it, called "Reishi Mushroom, Herb of Spiritual Potency and Medicinal Wonder" by Terry Willard.

    Really worth reading!

  • Heikki
    Daniel,

thank you for your valuable work and, once again, an interesting article!

Anyway, there are two things about making Chaga extracts that have been haunting me.

First, some recipes involve decocting (using boiling water) while others recommend using water you can touch without burning yourself. And then there some that make use of both cold and warm water. See http://www.survivaltopics.com/survival/the-chaga-natures-medicinal-mushroom/ for example and you'll know what I mean.

Second, there's same kind of inconsistency about what parts of chaga should be used. The outmost black part, the middle dark brown part, the inner lighter brown part, or some combination of these?

I'm puzzled. I would be grateful for your (or anybody's) informed opinion on these issues.

    Peace and Joy!

    Heikki

ps. My method has been to first chop the black and dark brown part, dry them at the room temperature using a fan, and then grind them to powder or very small bits. I've used not-burning-hot water to make tea out of the powder - for the fear that too hot water would destroy some of the valuable compounds.
  • MT
    Hi Daniel,
When making tincures and decoctions do you recommend grinding the mushroom into a powder?
  • MT,
I don't. If they are fresh occasionally I will blend them in the menstrum (vodka) to expose the surface area.

    Usually I slice them.

    Hi Daniel!

Thank You so much for the infos and all you are doing.... So much inspiration! I made a few time reishi-chagua tea so amazing! I think for bayhing, the best would be taking showing in cold water hehe

hopefully i would see you soon in Montreal! You said in one of your videos you love picking herbs in Montreal.... Can you tell me where?

    Thanks! Be Well

    Nick.
  • Nicolas,

I love to go up the the mountain in the city, and have picked herbs there... The city plants some interesting plants also, such as tobacco, as decoratives...

For the most part when I say Montreal I really mean north of the city in the Laurentian Mountains.... There are some springs on www.findaspring.com in the areas I visit often!

  • Good afternoon, Daniel!

As a whole family chiropractor in Anchorage, Alaska, I have the honor of guiding my patients toward conscious choices in many aspects of health (physical, spiritual, emotional, mental, et cetera). Working from pre-conception through pregnancy and beyond to geriatric years is a wonderful challenge.

I am currently exploring raw veganism and would love to learn more and lead groups of my patients on foraging hikes. I have the blessing of living in a virtually untouched state.

Do you have any plans to visit our great state?

Thank you for sharing your passion with others!

    Dr. Jessica
  • Dr Jessica,

Alaska, I would love to visit there. No plans to yet, though I have been talking about it a while now.

In the mean look around to see if there is a "primitive skills" community near you. They are a reliable store house of local knowledge!

    Hope to visit soon!

    Hey Daniel,
I live in the Slocan Valley near where you had your retreat, but unfornately missed it. I was wondering if you're planning on doing more retreats or speakeasy's here in the future... I hope so! I was also wondering if Chaga is found in this part of Canada; from what I've read it's only found in eastern Canada. We have a lot of dead, dying and fallen birch in our area and I'm planning on checking them out. I really appreciate your work and the amount of info you put out there to educate people. Keep following your path! heather
  • Heather,

I have personally found Chaga in the Slocan valley, so Yes... I am sure it is there!

I should be back in May, and will have that posted soon on my events page, stay tuned!

Will be cool to meet you out there!

ive been taking a cordyceps product from one of the top 'hot water extracted' mushroom companies... but now ive looked and see it is a micelium extract, but they do guarantee the amount of polysacharides and other cordycep chemicals.... do you like this product ? am i wasting my money? i do realize that real wild non vegetarian cordyceps can cost 15 million per ton...

    Hi,
    Love your work.
A few questions if you wouldn't mind.
What water filter systems would you recommend esp., to get rid of flouride and all these other things they put in the water to dumb us down.
What water to do you bathe in?
Is it ok to bathe in unfiltered water, i'm guessing you still absorb loads.
I plan to try bottling spring water but there are only a handfull in the UK i know of , so hopefully atleast one will be good quality.

    Thankyou
  • Hey Lauren!

You don't like the dumbing down? Me either :)

I moved out into the mountains so that I could bathe in well water... I have a device that I have mounted on my shower head to vortex the water and make it more "lively". They are found here: http://www.greenplanetparadise.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=51

Living in the city, or when I travel, I bring a carbon block shower filter. It isn't perfect, but it does reduce the chlorine. I have been putting the filter and vortexer together on the road which ends up being the size of a saxophone :)

You see, chlorine volatilizes into a gas when heated and is breathed in when you shower. In fact we end up with more in blood from bathing than from drinking tap water. Carbon block does not remove Fluoride however, this requires Reverse Osmosis or Distillation. Neither produces a very drinkable water... In line RO is an option if you are planning to be in the city a while. If in the country good water is usually accessible at Springs.

You are in the UK, how is the water there?

    ~D
  • Hey Daniel
Love the post and I for one will be out there this weekend doing the same thing. I would love the oppurtunity to have a giude us in a walk out to see this wonderful beings we harvest for our health and well being! I have just started a potluck group and this would tie as a great special event for one of the meetings! http://www.meetup.com/Central-Maine-Raw-Foodies This would all take place in Central Maine and I can take you right to 3 trees with reishi and also turkey tail, and chaga! Also would there be any interest in doing a camping retreat in Bingham Maine area. There is a great spring on the way and that is used by the towns people and ther are many more along the side of the dirt road on the way up to the camp site that are not used but run all the time!
Thank You for all that you do it is much apreciated!
  • Jim Butler
Whoa! Awesome post, Daniel! I tried out the hot water extraction with various tree mushrooms that I gathered from the forest this fall. I put them in a crock pot with spring water for about 12 hours and the water that was extracted was powerful stuff! (It also stunk up the house, but it's all good). It was very woody, but I converted that "tea" into an elixir (which I learned from your course) and it was awesome.

It's my dream to get more involved in this community and to continue to learn as much as I can. I hope to see you in person some day, perhaps at one of your retreats or something. And THANK YOU so much for Deer Antler Velvet---that is a hard core product! And COLOSTRUM---just for bringing that into the consciousness. This "force field" that you mention isn't just a joke---it is real! My friend has Epstein Barr virus so I am going to try to get her on some colostrum and see what effect it has!

    Best!

    Daniel,
I'm from the dense static of southern california, where it is sometimes hard to even find a tree. Well not really, but you know what I mean. I love getting out to the beach and mountains especially now that I've been developing a stronger relationship with the elements. Over the last few months I've been using reishi slices from Mountain Rose Herbs. I've tinctured and made tea (decoction).
One question, can I decoct the reishi slices after I have used them to make a tincture?
I have tried this before, as well as just making the tea from the dried slices the way I received them.
    Thanks so much

By the way, a wild mushroom hunt would be amazing. In my surrounding environment of concrete, pollution, and brain washed robots I feel an intuitive link to medicine, and this area is so developed and devoid of nature and what it can offer. I should relocate.
    Thanks for all your dedication!

These medicinal mushrooms are absolutely fascinating!

After studying and working with a number of different kinds of medicinal mushrooms for a while now, the sense I'm getting is that when taken regularly over the long term, they may actually have the capacity to help rewire, modulate and enhance the functioning not only of our immune systems, but also of our neuroendocrine system.

It feels as if the intelligence contained within the mycelial networks that steward forests by recycling and redistributing the energy and nutrients derived from soil and decomposing trees, can have a profound effect on us when we consume medicines made from their fruiting bodies, in that they can assist our own human neural networks to function at a more refined level.

My sense is that when we ingest the active components of these fungi, that they can help to deprogram us from unhealthy and/or destructing patternings, and at the same time assist to RE-program us on several different levels - neurologically, hormonally, immunologically and even energetically - bringing us towards healthier, more constructive patterns and ways of being.

I'm even beginning to wonder if using these mushrooms long term can assist us intelligently somehow on the level of our DNA.

Does any of this ring true for you, Daniel?

Medicinal mushrooms feel to me to be some of, if not THE ultimate botanical tonics for human being on the planet, and I'm very grateful to you, Daniel, and those others who are speaking out about them, educating folks and helping people to recognize the myriad and profound benefits of these noble fungal allies!

Thank you so much for all your good work!

    :-)

Great stuff Daniel. I'm in Niagara about 45 minutes from Toronto, and I know a bunch of people in this area who would be down for a Toronto lecture.

Niagra is one of the most potent places I have ever been... Of course you have to tune out the Casinos!

Might be a great place to have a Water talk... right there at the Falls.

    Hi Daniel,

What you are doing is great! But what do you think about the New World Order, have you done research? As of recently Politicians, Obama,Gordon Brown , you name it, our spouting it out like its nothing! A few years ago it was deemed a conspiracy , now its almost here! Please watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qX_qOaZmCFM. I would like to know your opinion!
    They are drugging our water!!!!Openly!!!
    Thankyou
  • Zahraa...

Lets just say that I keep on things ;)

Its all about what we do with this info, ehe? Panic is never good. Hence the empowerment approach. I think it makes sense to see how this is being done, and then create strategies to counteract it. At least this is what I am doing, and why I am teaching.

There is a New World upon us. My teaching is aimed at those who are more than just in the know, its for those who are preparing to SurThrive any circumstance....

I suspect there will be a lot less people around to argue about it soon. My focus right now is making sure that those I love remain amongst the living :)

We got to be here to take the Earth back, right?

  • Hey Daniel, awesome website and material. Really dig your youtube videos and lectures. I live just outside of Toronto, Ontario, and there is an abundance of beautiful forested area and amazing spring water. I've found quite a number of chagas in the surrounding forests already, as well as birch polypores and many others. Definitely a bounty here, which is awesome. It would be awesome to have you come up to Toronto and do a few lectures/mushroom hunts. Check out my blog as well if you get a chance and lemme know what you think. Cheers
  • Drewseph!

Thanks for your words... Toronto eventually :)

That is a great area, and I have visited many springs there. Gwelph stands out in my mind.

Also, thanks for the big ups on your blogspot, and for cracking open the soy story!

Lets keep the information flowing and bubbling up like springs!

    ~D
  • i live in Minnesota and i know there are mushrooms here. however, i know there are more here than what my knowledge is aware of. we harvest chicken of the woods and are on the lookout for chaga. if you are ever near Fargo, ND and want to do a mushroom class i'm sure i could round up some people. also... what are the those shelf mushrooms in the pictures?
